Position papers are written before a conference, encompassing the research you do. Using the background guides on the website for your committee is very helpful for finding a place to start. The position papers are usually one page long, single spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font, with a works cited page at the end. The citations can be in MLA or any other format-just stay consistent. Position papers include three one-paragraph sections:
Paragraph 1: A brief topic overview and what issues related to the topic are present in your country
Paragraph 2: A summary of previous UN actions on the topic, or any actions that your country has taken to address the issue. You can use any policies that have been enacted
within your country or any involvement in international organizations and agreements.
Paragraph 3: Your country’s position on the issue and possible solutions. Try to make these as unique as possible. This should be the longest paragraph.
You should also make sure to include a heading at the top of the page. In the heading, make sure you put your committee, topic, country, delegation (your name), and your school.
You need to write a position paper for both topics-if you're in a double delegation, you can each write one; if you're in a single delegation, you have to write both. Make sure to have an understanding of the other topic in case that's the topic that gets voted for you to discuss for the conference.
